CES 2009 Coverage to Start on Tuesday - I want to update everyone on the 2009 CES coverage. The website will be reconfigured for the week. I will have two video embeds at the very top of the website that will have the latest video we have pushed online. On Tuesday the team from TechPodcasts.com will start their CES 2009 coverage. One will be the regular content the crew has pushed up, aka what we are terming the primary channel and a secondary embed will have the back channel video. The Primary channel will contain our daily wrap up and professional interviews. The Back Channel will have content that show what it is like to be at CES. On the B...

Glad I Didn't Buy a Zune... - Apparently overnight from Tuesday to Wednesday, many, if not all, first generation Zune 30 gb players froze and refuse to operate. The shutdowns seem to have occurred simultaneously around 1:30 a.m. Wednesday, December 31. Zunes that have frozen may or may not start up again, and when they do start up, they freeze again before completely booting. Microsoft has issued a vague "we're working on the problem" statement on the Zune website. I have a nearly four year old iPod 60 gb player (gen IV, I think). I've never had one second of a problem with it (I can't say the same for iTunes, however). When I bought MP3 players for everyone in my household for Christmas, I opted for Sony and Sansa players, something without much operating system to go wrong, and with no firmware updates to screw anything up. I'd have bought iPods but they were out of my budget for a family of five. Since my entire household is now on a New Year's Eve trip to Chicago, and everyone ...

Fighting on Twitter - Round 1 - We've seen it in the past. One thing is said and a verbal fight breaks out. I remember having to deal with these "Fires" when I was doing a few different Forums. Good thing was it was always contained within a specific site and usually gotten control of (meaning every now and then someone got banned) before things got out of hand. Enter Twitter. I've seen a few fights before on Twitter. One thing is said and people react. Someone says the person doesn't know what their talking about. Threads ensue. What's the difference in this and a forum? Public record. Twitter is one big public record that gets regurgitated through other sites and (at least for now) is searchable to everyone - at least the last 1500 posts on search.twitter.com. Sometimes these fights are to put someone in their place. However I wouldn't be surprised if some fights are "Wrestling Hooks" - Pre-planned to drive up interest. I've seen it many times before. I have also seen one pers...

Huge Loss to Podcasting Community - This morning while I sat with my power out after an island wide power blackout, I was informed that Podango a company which competes with RawVoice had informed its podcasters that they were on shaky ground financially. This comes as very sad news to me as I know the team over their has worked very hard to build out their community and content offerings. More info on what is going to happen to their site and the shows hosted on it will probably break tomorrow. Business is tough right now, and everyone has had to be careful on strategies that they pick. One of the things that has always amazed me is that companies such as Podango and Mevio (formally Podshow) have given away free hosting which has to be a huge drain financially. Hosting is not cheap, even at the price we charge for hosting media at Blubrry.com its a steal. As with any...

No $99 4 Gig iPhone, but WalMart Sales Start Sunday - I think it's a shame. I might've bought a 4 gig model. Walmart confirmed it will be selling the iPhone at select stores - most likely the ones that already have an Apple section to it. They will be selling the 8 and 16 gig iPhones. If you want to save a couple bucks (literally), you can get them there for $197 and $297 respectively. Purchasing in other stores will cost you $199 and $299. There was a lot of buzz on a $99 - 4 gig model. In all reality, a 4 gig model is pretty good for those who want to use it mostly as a phone. My current smartphone (an HTC) only has 128 Meg on the phone and a Mini SD card that adds another 2 gig to it. Then again, I don't have the iBeer application or anything like that. It doesn't mean that Walmart wont offer a 4 gig model down the road. Maybe they will announce at MacWorld new iPhones. I don't think Apple would go backwards - unless it's a 4 gig iPhone mini. I would guess, though, they would announce new iPhones at 32 and...

Nextar MA588-1R MP3 Player Review - MP3 Players come in all shapes and sizes and having been sent one of these units to review I decided that it would be a great thing for my 10 year old to play with. The price on these are really cheap generally retailing for around $24.99 they make a great stocking stuffer for the parent on a budget. Ray played with it for a couple of days, used the computer here in the office to load some tracks. I provided no assistance to make sure he would be ok.. His response has been pretty positive for a 10 year old and says that it sounds as good as the one my older daughter has and that he fiddled with the EQ to make some of the songs sound better. His only complaint the screen was hard to read.. Well for $24.99 do you expect the screen to be big.. Overall no complaints and if the 10 year old is happy then it should make for a good stocking stuffer...

GoodYear GY-145 GPS Review - Having had my hands on a number of GPS units over the past couple of years I was very curious when the folks at GoodYear came out with a GPS. Not exactly a product you would expect them to come out with. I tested the device here in Hawaii and while some will say why test a GPS in Hawaii, I had a specific mission in mind when I tested this unit. First of all the traffic is really bad at times so I waited till it was one of those days in gridlock when I employed my strategy. This GPS comes with the ability for it to look ahead and give you some alternate routes. So I followed the alternate routes that the GPS gave me in my time of need and found some back streets the locals knew well but not having been born and raised here I did not know about. Much to my surprise more often than not I was able to get ahead of the traffic by using back streets it rout...

Zero pollution energy creation and storage - Regular readers may remember me talking about the dead-end that is electric cars with batteries. The complexity, weight, recharge time and dangerous chemicals that go into them make them of low practicality to the mass market. Bio-diesel is an even worse idea given the low energy recovery and the land it takes away from producing food. These two technolgies seem to form the cornerstone of almost all low emmision vehicles being produced or planned. We are wasting time and money on these dead-end technologies when better solutions are available. Hydrogen fuel cells are a very possible and safe technology, and there has been success with trial and even production vehicles using this method. And while there is no widespread filling infrastructure in place today, it should be no harder to introduce than unleaded gas, or LPG was. A team a...

A New Reprieve for Windows XP and Vista Not Being Deployed - Two things in the news today. First, Microsoft has once again, for at least the third time, granted an extension to PC manufacturers who are insisting that they still want to purchase XP. Such manufacturers can now order XP through the end of January, even if they don't want delivery of the software until as late as May. In my recollection, this is definitely the third, and possibly the fourth, reprieve for Microsoft's most-used-to-date operating software. And in another survey, Microsoft is finding out that 10% or less of corporate environments have deployed Vista. Educational environments are showing a slightly higher rate of adoption, but not much, at about 15%. Corporations and institutions of higher learning are holding onto the more stable and less resource-hoggy (is that a word) XP. If Vista is deployed, it is on individual laptops that are used for travel or other off-corporate-network projects. I know our institution is not deploying Vista except into a limit...

RIAA to Cease Prosecution of File Sharers - The RIAA has decided to cease prosecution of file sharers directly, and instead force ISP's to become the new copyright police. The RIAA wasn't even able to truly determine if people were sharing music, so a ginormous ISP is supposed to be able to figure it out? I have BitTorrent loaded one one of my machines. I've used it to make large files of my own creation available to people who need it (most notably my work on adaptive technology) and used it to download similar materials. I've also used it to retrieve a working copy of software that I own but that the CD has been damaged. Is ATT, my ISP, going to know I'm using BitTorrent legitimately, or are they going to assume that because my music library also exists on the same computer that is running BitTorrent, that I must be an illegal music file-sharer? This isn't helping anyone; the RIAA is just trying to find more effective means to catch people doing what may be legitimate work. It just gets ...

Intels touchscreen netbook - In the world of gadgets smaller usually translates to cooler. While the new rnage of netbooks on the market have had some success in this paradigm I have not yet seen much to get me excited by them. They are not small enough to be radically easier to carry, and they are not large enough to be convenient to use for most purposes. The ultra-thin laptops are generally the better compromise position. Until recently touchscreen laptops have not really lived up to the hype either. The speed of the handwriting recognition has not allowed them to live up to the promise. With the advances in touch screens, particularly multi-touch technology, the likelihood of this market becoming successful is growing. Intel have combined new the latest touchscreen technology with a netbook to produce a kid-targetted laptop that looks interesting. According to laptop magazine In...

Apple Pulls out of MacWorld - Just After My Podcast is Done. AUGH! - So I usually do my Podcast in the afternoon for Wednesday consumption. I put on my voice, fired up the news aggregator and Podcast away. When I get everything done, post the podcast and send the messages, I usually walk away from my computer and not look at the news. That way if something comes after the fact, I don't go - DOH!. Of course that happened today. In my podcast, I talked about MacWorlds' prediction of what Steve Job's keynote is going to be in 2009. The hot and heavy talk is about a new iMac. But when I got everything done and posted, I found that CNet reported a news story that now Steve Jobs will NOT be at MacWorld. Further, Apple had put out a statement saying that this will be the last MacWorld for Apple. DOH! Apple - In a statement on their website - Announced they are "reaching more people in more ways than ever before, so like many companies, tra...

My Yearly Top Ten List - Everyone is doing top ten lists for the end of the year. I'd like to publish mine. Below are the ten tech/geek things I do not want to live without. My 60 gb video iPod. I use this thing every day. It is almost three years old, scratched and dinged, but is still the thing I do not leave the house without. It plugs into my car stereo when I'm driving and keeps me sane at my desk at work with noise-canceling headphones and has saved many a party along the way. My ergonomic keyboard. Yes, the bulky Microsoft version in that fabulous putty color. I type a lot as a writer and as a geek, and this keyboard has saved me a lot of pain in my shoulders and hands over the years. Flash/Thumb drives. I've had my butt saved more times than I can count because I had something backed up on a flash drive that I was carrying. Everything from programs to presentations to critical files have become easily portable and sh...

Why I Hate Microsoft Outlook - I hate Microsoft Outlook. Back in the day, when I was teaching people how to use it (Office 95 and then Office 97), it was a wonderful thing. Sharing calendars, preview views, lots of different configurations that could accommodate anyone's needs. Before that there had only been Lotus Notes, and while it was good, it didn't lend itself to all of the iterations that MS Office did. But then there were holes, and I could no longer use some of my most-used functions, like the preview pane, and linking out from emails, because of the holes in both Outlook and Internet Explorer. Then Office 2007 came out. It was supposed to be bigger and badder and better. But I hated Outlook 2007 from the very first moment I used it. At least it didn't insult me with the whole "ribbon" thing as in the other Office programs, but it has turned into an amazingly slow, earth-pounding, gigantic dinosaur. We are required to use it at work. When I log in in the morning, I've learned to just g...

Pepcom and Digitial Experience Frustration Grows - My frustration with getting my cameraman badged for Digital Experience which is run by Pepcom is such at this point that our coverage of their event this year is in jeopardy.  This all stems from my having hired what they term a non accredited cameraman. What they are telling me is that unless I hire what they qualify as a Professional accredited camera person that they will not issue a badge for that person to attend.  With my budget there is simply no way I can hire another camera person just for their event while every other event has had no issue badging my camera person that I have used for other events this year. Their policy in my opinion is outdated and really contradicts how they have done business in the past. Because the past two years that we attended their event we did not have an accredited camera person all we were required to submit was what I submitted this year.  It seems that they expect that bloggers/podcasters to have professional a...

EPIC Action Sports Video Cam Review - While in Costco today I picked up a $99.00 EPIC Action Sports Video Cam. I wanted to use it as a cam I could wear during CES to help in capturing some of the Back Channel Video. Well after testing it for about 15 minutes. I might as well throw this thing in the trash. The video is horribly grainy it reminds me of webcam quality 10 years ago. I had my son actually ride up and down the street with it on his bicycle and when we viewed it looked like a 70’s television picture when the reception was real bad. I don’t often trash a product but in my opinion this has to be the most overhyped piece of equipment I have ever seen. It’s no wonder the manufacture did not even provide a screen shot of actual video taken with this thing. My advice do not buy this piece of equipment. I will be returning mine to Costco. ...

Digsby Adds Annoying Plugins - I am installing the latest version of Digsby and am shocked that the application is asking me to install a number of highly intrusive plugins with the install. Applications like the VoloMedia plugin that calls home to mama every time you watch or listen to something in iTunes. They also are pushing a plugin by SmartShopper that essentially spys on you while you are surfing the Internet to give you offers from their partner sites. This is a really bad move by Digsby and if they need some money why not ask people to pay for the application. It is a good one but I am not about to subject myself to installing a number of questionable plugins. To really stick it to you at the end of the install they offer you this page. Processes, Processes - Killing my Web Experience - Todd's talked about this before - you go into task manager and see a bunch of programs you closed still running. Then again you see programs you never opened running. Some of them need to be there, but others could be nixed. The worst part - it could be slowing down your Web (or computer experience). I was working on the web - going from page to page doing research today. All of a sudden Firefox just didn't want to load a webpage. The "Loading" graphic would stay there and the page would stay blank. Of course when the pages don't load, the first thing I check is the cable modem. But then my twitters (which happen through a program called "Twhirl") and my email both came in. So I have internet access. The next step is to check Task Manager. Apple has the iPod updater in there - And I don't even own an iPod. Google Updater is in there twice. Why? Could it be to update the Google search that is on the upper right hand corner of Firefox? Hey MySpace! I Really Don't Want Email! Thank You - I really enjoy it when a social network updates or adds new features to the site. It makes it cool and exciting to have a new feature or a way to update. However, when they add or change stuff, they change your preferences. Not in a real bad way - more in the level of sending me email. For example, a couple years ago I checked a box on MySpace that said "Don't let people send me Event Invites". Up until today I never received an event invite. When I started getting them again, I went into the options to see if this box was checked. I couldn't find the box - it must've been removed. There was a box that said "Send email of event invites" and that was checked. I instantly unchecked it. So while I won't get Event invites by email, I will see them on my MySpace page. That's too bad, but not completely bothersome - I'll just ignore the Event invites. I did go through my settings and I was surprised to see how many boxes were checked for me to receive an ...

New Technologies on the Horizon - As we get to the end of 2008 the predictions for what will happen next year start coming out. In the PC space it looks generally like it will be a continuation of the same process we have seen recently. Die sizes for chips will get smaller, hard drives will get larger capacities, and video cards will continue to increase in speed. Tech Radar have put together a good summary on the main movements we will likely see in the PC space. Outside of some niche markets though, there is little need for us to have faster computers. The thrust of the technology change for the general and corporate user is going to continue towards smaller and lower power. Intel have a new 32nm chips coming out next year with 22nm and 16nm to follow by 2012 and 2015ish. Given that they are not already touting the power and speed benefits of the new sizes yet, the incremental change in power per...

I got a deal on an ATI Theatre 550 capture card - which is a PCI Express card - And should push the video better than my old Hauppage card I bought years ago. I have yet to be impressed. Let's start out in saying I stopped buying ATI years ago because their video has always had problems. I had an ATI Rage 128 card and the performance never hit what I expected. I ended switching up to NVidia graphics cards and never looked back. NVidia has some solid hardware and software that has never really failed me. But my last ATI card I bought was years ago. Maybe things changed - ATI was bought out by AMD, new technologies and advancements could make things better. It didn't. I got the card yesterday. I need to preface this by saying it is a OEM ca...

Mogulus Pro Offering Way to Expensive - This morning I received an email from the folks over at Mogulus announcing their pro-streaming service. When I looked at the price of the Mogulus Pro offering I just about fell out of my chair. Their prices start at $350.00 a month with only 25gb of bandwidth allowance, plus if you bust your 25gb cap you will be charged $1.50 per gig. Someone over there is smoking crack. They must think content producers are stupid. I have used a variety of paid streaming services for about 1/3rd the monthly cost they are planning on charging, and have been able to have my own branded player and many of the other options that are offering with this pro-offering. This is a oppo...

Even With Technology, It's Harder to Work when Your Sick... - I have been beefing up my websites. I also have been working on some external projects hard. But all of that came to a crashing halt last week. Why? I got sick. I felt this illness coming down on Monday (Nov. 24th). I didn't think much of it, but after my Podcast on Tuesday, I pretty much knew I should take some downtime and relax a bit while ingesting something like lots of Liquids. (Here is a keynote - If you have a fever and your lips start to dry out quick, you might want to get some water in your system. ) By Thursday I was pretty much on the back and forth thing - Morning I would be OK, but then by evening I was burning up and freezing at the same time. Saturday I had to play with the band and by the end of the 3rd set I was hurting more than I ever hurt before. If it wasn't for the little catnaps between breaks, I would have probably not made it. Monday - Feeling better but coughing entered into the mix. Still did my shows. Tuesday - Coughing...
